When you’re pregnant and close to your due date, your body needs all the rest and time you can get, and that’s why Maternity Leave exists, and it comes with certain benefits. This time is crucial for your well-being, which is why maternity leave is a right for all pregnant women– including you. Are you being denied maternity leave? Maternity benefits? Is your employer pushing you to leave your job? – That’s illegal, not just wrong. According to the law, you have rights– which include nursing breaks, a paid leave for pregnancy, a guarantee of a job after you return and protection from overexerting work like standing for long hours and lifting heavy things during your recovery period and while you’re carrying. The Maternity Benefit Act of 1961 and 2017 empower you, and your identity as a mother. It includes– ➡ Sufficient maternity leave - 26 weeks for your first two children 12 weeks for your third During your time after your extended maternity leave is over, strenuous work is not permitted– and should not be expected by your employer. In case someone tries to fire you, refuse your leave or cut your pay, get help from someone in your area who knows job laws, someone you trust at work, or file a complaint on the online government portal. In case of severe mishandling– you may always refer to the Maternity Benefit Acts. You may also register to the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana– which helps you get basic support and lends you Rs 5,000 for your first child. Being a mother is sacred– and that sanctity should be protected. You have your rights– be aware of them and do not be afraid of using them. You are entitled to them.
